CBD’s Anticarcinogenic Properties | What You Need to Know

Among the many benefits of CBD is the fact that it is anticarcinogenic. An anticarcinogenic is simply a substance that counteracts the effects of a carcinogen or inhibits the development of cancer. Many studies have been carried out on the effects of CBD on the treatment of cancer and there is overwhelming evidence that CBD can be a potentially effective alternative treatment of many types of cancers. It is apparent that CBD has clearly been shown as an anti-tumor agent. 

This assertion can be explained by the fact that CBD limits the flow of blood to tumors, thereby closing so many pathways leading to tumor cell death. Of course, the strength of CBD in destroying tumors lies in the fact that while at it, it does not adversely affect healthy cells. CBD has been proven to destroy tumor cells without resulting is psychotropic side effects.

A 2008 study that looked at the effectiveness of CBD to induce apoptosis between normal thymocytes (thymus gland cells) and thymoma (thymus cancer) cells, revealed that CBD induced apoptosis in both types of cells. It is imperative to note that both cells had a marked increase in apoptosis based on concentration and time. The researchers of this study concluded that CBD affected apoptosis, with more potency in the normal thymocytes than in the thymoma cells, even though apoptosis occurred earlier in the thymoma (cancer) cells.

According to a 2012 study, CBD prevents the flow of blood to tumor cells by multiple mechanisms, thereby inhibiting migration and new tumor cell growth. Of course, this finding only goes a long way to support the hypothesis that CBD is an effective anti-cancer agent. Even though previous studies had suggested that cannabinoids had properties that killed cancer cells and stopped them from spreading, this particular study aimed at examining the effects of CBD on the growth of tumors, especially its effects on the blood flow of the tumor. It is imperative to note that this approach was to evaluate CBD human vein endothelial cells by focusing on cell growth and health.

In 2015 a study was carried out to address the effects of neuroblastoma, the most common cancer in children. This study was worth conducting since cannabis is reported to have both apoptotic and antiangiogenic effects. The results showed that even though both compounds (CBD and THC) had anti-tumor properties, CBD was the more active one. Detailed findings from this study, therefore revealed that CBD reduced the viability of tumor cells, and rather induced apoptosis (normal cell death). Moreover, CBD was also reported to cause an increase in an activator that moderates cell death. The authors of this study concluded that CBD had anti-tumor properties with no psychoactive side effects. Well, the researchers also revealed that there was a need for more research on CBD as an anti-cancer drug.

In addition, the findings from a 2017 study revealed that CBD is a promising therapeutic benefit for cancer, especially for blocking cancer metastasis, which is the development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site. The aim of this study was to investigate a specific Gs protein receptor (GPR12) and to test if CBD has any active participation reacting with it.

According to another study that was carried out in 2009, CBD was reported to impair the invasion of human cervical as well as human lung cancers. The aim of this study was to investigate whether or not CBD would be anti-carcinogenic as other cannabinoids had been found to be. The authors of this study looked at cancer cell invasion and that explains why they used an assay to assess the vasculogenic activity of tumor cells. Of course, the conclusion of this study provided a novel mechanism underlying the anti-invasive action of cannabidiol. In addition, the findings of this study also implied the use of CBD as a therapeutic option for the treatment of highly invasive cancers.

Another study that was conducted in 2010 equally corroborated the fact that CBD was an anti-cancer agent. The participants of this clinical trial involved 177 patients with severe pains caused by advanced stage cancer. Two extracts and a placebo were administered to these patients who were using opioid chronically, even though they were not getting any relief from it. One extract was a combination of THC:CBD, whereas the other was a THC extract. The findings from this study revealed that THC: CBD extract was effective for the relief of pain in patients with advanced cancer, who could not be fully relieved by strong opioids.
