CBD’s Anticonvulsant Properties | What You Need to Know

One of the many beneficial properties of CBD lies in its anticonvulsant properties. Convulsion is the general term that is used to describe muscle contractions. Some people use convulsion interchangeably with seizures, but that is not correct considering that seizures refer to an electrical disturbance in the brain. Convulsion often occurs when an individual’s muscle contracts uncontrollably and could continue for a few seconds or many times.

Moreover, convulsion could affect a specific part of the body, just like it could affect the entire body. Convulsion could be caused by a number of things, including certain medical conditions such as epilepsy, paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia as well as migraines. Scientists have also asserted that reactions to certain medications could also trigger convulsions.

Once a person suffers from convulsion, it is imperative to take immediate actions to alleviate it, otherwise it could be fatal. The Center for Disease Control has, however, listed a few first aid practices that could help sufferers of convulsion. Some of such practices nevertheless include placing them on the floor in a bid to prevent them from falling and hurting themselves, placing them on the side so that they can breathe easier, clearing the place from hard and sharp objects, removing their glasses, placing any flat and soft object beneath their head, loosening or removing anything such as a tie around their neck, as well as calling an ambulance if the convulsion lasts longer than five minutes.

According to some scientists, CBD could be a safer alternative treatment of convulsion. It is worthy to note that the properties of CBD focus on different targets in the body, including glutamate receptor antagonists, sodium ion channels, calcium ion channels, the GATA system as well as receptor agonists in the brain. That said, anticonvulsants are known to affect the neurotransmitters responsible for sending messages or attaching themselves to the neurons. This is done to alter the activity of the cell by switching how ions flow into and out of the neurons.

CBD is also known to have the most anticonvulsant properties out of approximately 85 cannabinoids. This explains why CBD is used by most people in treating convulsion, which is one of the symptoms of epilepsy. CBD alleviates convulsion by merely targeting the different regions of the brain that trigger convulsion.

Of course, these regions include the receptor agonists, GATA transcription factors, sodium and calcium ion channels, and glutamine receptor antagonists. As a matter of fact, the anticonvulsant properties of CBD makes it possible for it to alter the neurotransmitters that attach themselves to the gazillion or neurons, thereby changing the functioning of the of brain cells by altering how ions flow in and out.

Researchers are yet to carry studies on the effectiveness of CBD in treating convulsion, since most of the efforts have rather been put into investigating CBD’s effectiveness in treating seizures. Even though there is a need for more research to be conducted on this subject, many scientists and researchers think that CBD could be a safer alternative treatment because it is not associated with psychoactive effects like other cannabinoids such as THC. Moreover, unlike the conventional medications used in treating convulsions, CBD has very mild side effects which are likely to last only for a few hours.
