Over the past decades, CBD has been found to have numerous health benefits. Even though CBD has many uses, its role as an anti-inflammatory agent can never be overemphasized. Multiple studies have revealed that CBD is a great anti-inflammatory compound. Nevertheless, to understand CBD’s anti-inflammatory role, it is imperative for us to first of all have an understanding of what inflammation is.

Inflammation plays an important role in how the immune system responds to infections and injury. As a matter of fact, inflammation is the body’s own way of signaling the immune system to heal, repair damaged tissues as well as defend itself against foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria. Therefore, without inflammation, wounds and infections would become deadly. However, inflammation can become problematic if the process goes on for too long or if the inflammatory response occurs in parts of the body that are not needed.

Chronic inflammation has been proven to be linked to certain diseases like heart disease, stroke and even autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. An anti-inflammatory agent is therefore the property of the substance or treatment that is used in reducing inflammation or swelling. Some of the common anti-inflammatory medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, celecoxib and naproxen.

Even though there are medications that treat inflammations, most of these medications come with adverse side effects such as drowsiness, constipation, diarrhea and other sicknesses. Many scientists currently consider medical marijuana as one of the most effective anti-inflammatory agents. According to a cannabis related study that was published by the National Institute of Health, cannabinoids exert anti-inflammatory properties as they go the extra mile in reducing the activity of the pathway that is most important to the inflammatory process. More so, cannabinoids help in stopping inflammations since they contain beta-carophyllene, a terpene found in a variety of plants which are used for inflammatory diets.

CBD has been successfully used to treat almost all inflammatory conditions. Like all cannabinoids, CBD upon consumption interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which regulates many of our bodily functions and ensures that everything works smoothly. Therefore, upon consuming CBD, it interacts with the endocannabinoid system and encourages it to produce a number of natural cannabinoids and by so doing, the body becomes in a better position to heal as well as regulate various functions. Besides producing self-healing cannabinoids, CBD also interacts with the CD2 receptors of the body which oversees the entire immune system.

According to a 2011 study from the University of Mississippi, CBD has a dramatic impact on inflammations. Detailed findings from this study revealed that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are so strong that it was able to reduce the risk of long term organ damage. This study aimed at investing how helpful CBD is in reducing the impact of inflammation in the body.

More so, findings from a 2013 study revealed that the implementation of CBD decreased the enzyme activities as well as many other functions that were associated with acute pancreatitis. It is imperative to note that this study was conducted on mice with acute pancreatitis. The researchers therefore concluded that CBD presented high anti-inflammatory effects in the mice with acute pancreatitis, but with virtually zero adverse side effects.

In addition, another study that was published in 2016 investigated the effects of CBD on rats with arthritis. The findings revealed that the application of the CBD gel on the rats significantly reduced joint swelling. The researchers of the study, therefore, concluded that the topical application of CBD was a successful treatment not only for arthritis pain and related behaviors, but also for general inflammations. The researchers also noted that unlike other anti-inflammatories, there was no evidence of adverse side effects from the use of CBD.

Nevertheless, some of the best CBD-rich marijuana strains that have strong anti-inflammatory properties include ACDC, Harlequin, Girl Scout Cookies, Charlotte’s web and Cannatonic etc. That said, as research continues into the positive benefits of CBD, there is a need for larger scale studies on humans, in a bid to maximize its anti-inflammatory properties accurately and effectively.
