One of the medicinal values of CBD lies in its antiemetic properties. This means that CBD is effective in alleviating nausea and vomiting, which are a common symptom of many medical conditions. Nausea is an uneasiness of the stomach, which usually comes before vomiting. Meanwhile vomiting is the forcible voluntary or involuntary emptying of the content of the stomach through the mouth. Nausea and vomiting are therefore protective defense mechanisms in the human body.

Nausea or vomiting isn’t a disease but could be symptoms of many health conditions. That said, short episodes of nausea and vomiting are generally not a cause for concern as long as it has a trigger. On the other hand, long episodes of nausea that extend beyond one or two days could be a sign of more serious conditions like migraine, hepatitis, seizures, head injury, ear disorders/infections, gastrointestinal disorder, pancreatitis, heart attack as well as other psychiatric and emotional disorders. Nausea and vomiting could also be triggered by pregnancy or certain medications.

There is some evidence that CBD is effective in treating nausea and vomiting. An in-depth knowledge of how nausea works will help us understand the role of CBD in treating both nausea and vomiting. It has been proven that the brain, the digestive as well as the nervous systems all play a part when the body gets nauseated. Of course, because we know more about the physiology of vomiting than we do about nausea, we often get therapies that help in relieving vomiting. That said, one of the keys to controlling the symptoms of vomiting is those receptors in parts of the brain as well as in the digestive tract that produce and bind with serotonin, a neurotransmitter. CBD, which is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid, therefore interacts with serotonin releasing receptors, in a bid to alleviate both nausea and vomiting. Scientists have also argued that CBD could be effective in easing anxiety, thereby helping the patients manage the angst of chronic nausea.

The acidic and raw form of CBD, which is known as CBDA has also been reported to be more active at the serotonin receptors. The findings from preliminary studies on animals have revealed that CBDA is a potent anti-emetic, which is even stronger than THC. It should be noted that CBDA is the form of CBD that is derived from a CBD-rich plant, before it is dried and heated. Once CBDA is heated, it becomes CBD.

CBD has also been reported to be effective in treating anticipatory nausea, which is often experienced by patients undergoing chemotherapy. As a matter of fact, prescription antiemetic medications are not helpful for anticipatory nausea, but rather, CBD shows a lot of promise. An outstanding study that was conducted by Linda Parker, a behavioral neuroscientist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada found that several phytocannabinoids including CBD and CBDA were effective in alleviating anticipatory nausea in conditioned lab animals. This finding only goes to buttress the point that CBD could be a more effective treatment of the severe nausea that comes with chemotherapy. Nonetheless, the author of this study suggested that there was a need for more clinical trials to be conducted on humans before a conclusion could be made on the subject.

A 2011 study that was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology found that manipulating the endocannabinoid system regulates nausea and vomiting in humans and other animals. Further findings from this same study equally revealed that nausea induced behavior in rats was relieved by CBD. The researchers of this study, therefore, concluded that CBD could work as an antiemetic that prevents nausea and alleviates the effects in humans. Many anecdotal evidences have equally revealed that CBD oil is incredibly effective in reducing the effects of nausea and even vomiting.

It is apparent that the studies that have been conducted to proof the antiemetic properties of CBD are few. Thus, more research needs to be done on the subject since nausea and vomiting are common conditions that are associated with many different kinds of illnesses.
