Neuroprotection simply refers to the mechanisms as well as strategies that are used to protect the body against nerve injury or degradation in a bid to prevent the breakdown of the central nervous system. The purpose of a neuroprotectant is therefore to limit nerve death after an injury that affects the central nervous system (CNS). Thus neuroprotective agents help the body in countering the effects of neurodegeneration or nervous breakdown.

To understand the whole essence of neuroprotectant, it is first and foremost imperative to be informed about what kills nerves and inhibits the proper functioning of the brain. Well, although the different diseases that relate to the central nervous system have different symptoms, the processes through which neuron cells die are similar. Some of these processes include oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, inflammatory changes, iron accumulation, excitotoxicity as well as brain changes.

Neuroprotective agents are grouped into different categories. For instance, free radical trapping agents, such as antioxidants and Vitamin E, are helpful in converting damaged and disease-causing, unstable free radical cells into molecules that are more stable and easier for the body to manage. Anti-excitotoxic agents on the other hand helps in blocking the glutamate receptors, in a bid to prevent excitotoxicity and degeneration, whereas anti-apoptotic helps in slowing down the process of neuron destruction in the body. The existing neuroprotectant cannot reverse damage, but they may protect against further nerve damage, as well as slow down any degeneration or breakdown of the central nervous system. Some drugs that currently show promise by providing neuroprotective effects for people with diseases such as ALS and multiple sclerosis (MS) include Riluzole, Amiloride, as well as Phenytoin.

Among the many benefits of CBD is also the fact that the compound contains neuroprotective properties. As a neuroprotective agent, CBD does not only help to reduce damage to the brain, and nervous system, but it also encourages the growth and development of new neurons. It should be noted that oxidative stress caused by ischemia, traumatic blows, or autoimmune and genetic disorders is reportedly able to cause both temporal and permanent neural damage. However, studies have shown that CBD is able to protect against this damage as well as improve recovery. Thanks to the neuroprotective properties of CBD, it could also be potentially beneficial in preventing the progression of certain neurological diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), and Parkinson’s disease. The findings from several studies have equally suggested that CBD could have therapeutic benefit for traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury or diseases as well as other neurological diseases like stroke.

The findings from a recent study indicated that CBD was effective in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis. The results of this study also demonstrated strong evidence that oral cannabis extract pills could be effective in alleviating central pain. Moreover, there was also moderate evidence pointing to the fact that the oral CBD spray could help lessen frequent urination. This same study equally investigated the effectiveness of CBD in treating other neurological conditions like Huntington’s disease and Tourette’s syndrome. Even though the evidence wasn’t too strong, there were indications that CBD could help reduce some of the motor symptoms associated with this condition.

Although the evidences so far suggest that CBD could be used to minimize neural and cell damage as well as encourage healing, there is an absolute need for more research on the subject in a bid to investigate CBD’s efficacy for promoting cell and neuron health.
