Treating Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) with CBD

CBD has also been reported to also be effective in treating inflammation caused by Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. It has been scientifically proven that high levels of cytokines, which are known to cause inflammation, are found in the cells of people suffering from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a chronic disease that affects one limb, notably the arms, legs, hands and feet. This condition causes severe pain and even though it’s more common in women, and peaks at the age of 40, it can equally affect anyone. It should be noted that this condition typically occurs after a surgery or an injury and that explains why it’s uncommon in children.

According to researchers, Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is caused by a damage to or malfunction of the peripheral and central nervous systems. The common triggers of this condition include pain, strains, surgery, fractures, soft tissue injury, limb immobilization as well as minor medical procedures. Even though medications, psychotherapy and rehabilitation therapy are some of the treatment options of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome, CBD has also been reported to be a powerful alternative treatment for this condition.

It is apparent that CBD works by interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It should be noted that the endocannabinoid system regulates all the organs in the body through a process known as homeostasis. Well, this control is done through cannabinoid receptors as well as endocannabinoids. As a matter of fact, CBD indirectly interacts with the endocannabinoid system by elevating endocannabinoids (anandamide and 2-AG) which are chemicals that the brain produces to bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). Moreover, by binding with the endocannabinoid anandamide, the CB1 cannabinoid receptor helps in mediating the neurological functions of the body, including appetite, mood, sleep cycle and sensitivity to pain.

Meanwhile the CB2 receptors bind with the 2-AG endocannabinoid, thereby helping in mediating the functions of the immune system. Thus, there are evidences that CBD may help sufferers of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome by elevating an agonist to the CB2 receptor. An agonist is simply a stimulating chemical that binds the receptor and results in response.

Some studies have also revealed that interacting with the CB2 receptor, the endocannabinoid system makes it possible to reduce both the feeling of pain as well as the symptoms of inflammation in the body.

CBD helps with inflammation through the same process it uses to help with pain, and this process is known as retrograde signaling. This is achieved by elevating the 2-AG endocannabinoid, which in turn communicates the CB2 receptor to stop sending out many attack cells without compromising the strength of the body’s immunity.

Even though people with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome are increasingly using CBD oil to treat their symptoms, there is no doubt that there is a need for more research on the topic.
