Treating Diabetes (Types 1 & 2) with CBD – Benefits & Effects

It is worthy to note that the therapeutic potentials of CBD in treating both Types I and II diabetes recently prompted an Israeli company called ISA Scientific to sign a worldwide collaboration and licensing deal to establish therapies containing CBD. The Chief Executive Officer, Mark J. Rosenfeld, however, revealed that unlike insulin and other existing medications for diabetes, CBD could rather suppress, reverse and perhaps cure the disease.

Diabetes is a group of diseases that affects how the body uses blood sugar (glucose). Of course, glucose is important to the body since it’s a great source of energy for the cells that make up the muscles and tissues. Besides, it’s also a main source of fuel for the brain. The underlying cause of diabetes varies depending on the type, even though both Types I and II diabetes could result in excess sugar, which can in turn lead to serious health problems. Diabetes is also quite common since it does not discriminate and could affect anyone irrespective of age, sex, race and gender.

According to the American Diabetes Association, an estimated 30 million people in the USA suffer from diabetes, meanwhile over 84 million of Americans have a condition medically known as prediabetes. The symptoms of diabetes vary according to how much the blood sugar level is elevated, but the most common symptoms of Types I and II diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, extreme hunger, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, slow-healing sores, unexplained weight loss, the presence of ketones in urine as well as frequent infections like gum, skin or vaginal infections.

Type I diabetes occurs when the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas are destroyed, thereby resulting in the accumulation of sugar in the bloodstream. Meanwhile Type II diabetes occurs when the cells become resistant to the action of insulin, but the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance, thereby causing sugar to build up in the bloodstream, instead of moving into the cells where it’s needed for energy. It should be noted that certain factors, including environmental, geographical and a family history of diabetes could increase the risks of developing diabetes.

Diabetes can be treated, but the cost of the conventional treatment which includes measures like insulin, diet change and medications like Precose, Amary, Glyset, Victoza, etc is considered too expensive for average people. It is estimated that up to 75 percent of diabetes patients in Canada face difficulties with the high cost of prescribed treatments and supplies. Thus, many people have turned to using CBD to treat their symptoms.

In 2015, a study led by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who is known for discovering (CBD), was carried out at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The researchers observed CBD receptors in other bodily tissues. The findings from this study suggested that the therapeutic effects of CBD could be modified to fit different receptors in a bid to treat different illnesses including diabetes, atherosclerosis as well as cardiovascular disease.

There are also mounds of evidences that CBD is helpful in treating inflammation, which has been reported to play a key role in the development of insulin resistance, hence Type II diabetes. According to a study that was conducted on rats with infarcts due to a failure of blood supply, the infarcts were reported to be 30% smaller after being pretreated with CBD. The researchers of this study further asserted that the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD could treat this inflammation, thereby improving the body’s metabolism.

Another study that was conducted on the effects of CBD on myocardial dysfunction, inflammationoxidative/nitrative stress, cell death and interrelated signaling pathways suggested that CBD can have great therapeutic potential in the treatment of complications of diabetes and may be other cardiovascular disorders.

Many scientists have opined that CBD is a safe alternative treatment of diabetes since it will not affect the daily lives of patients. Recall that CBD, unlike THC has no psychoactive properties and potential for abuse.
