Brief History Of Medical Marijuana In Maryland

Did you know that it took almost five years for medical marijuana to become available in Maryland once it was legalized? Maryland’s medical marijuana program was voted into law in 2012. However, it did not become operational until December of 2017.

Today nearly 100,000 Marylanders are now card-carrying medical marijuana patients. Moreover, more than 500 Maryland doctors, nurses, and even dentists have signed on to the program to be able to recommend medical marijuana to their patients.

One of the reasons that medical marijuana is so popular in our small but mighty state is that marijuana is still illegal for recreational use in Maryland.

Maryland’s medical marijuana program finally became operational in December of 2017.

Fifteen applicants were awarded preliminary licenses to grow medical marijuana and another 15 licenses were awarded to process medical marijuana. Another 7 companies were licensed to grow and process.

And by September 2019, Maryland had licensed 18 growers and 82 dispensaries.

How to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland

The first step to getting a medical marijuana card in Maryland is to register online as a patient with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission.

You’ll need a scan of your government-issued photo identification (driver’s license, passport or military ID), plus proof of address, a clear recent photo, and the last four numbers of their Social Security number.

If you don’t have one, you can get a proper photo by visiting your local drug store photo counter.

Once you’ve registered with the state, you’ll need to get a written certification from a qualified medical professional that is also registered with the state.

Patients under age 18 may also be registered by a parent or legal guardian.

Interestingly, you don’t actually need a medical marijuana card in Maryland. A written certification is sufficient to buy medical marijuana. However, if you would like a patient ID card, you can get one for $50.

Once you are approved you must purchase some medicine within 120 days otherwise your certification will be revoked.
