How Do I Get a CT Medical Marijuana Card?
The process of applying for a medical marijuana card in Connecticut is fairly straightforward. All applications are submitted online.
Here are the basic steps:
- Confirm your doctor is registered with the MMP – Before you do anything you need to determine if your doctor is registered with the medical marijuana program. You are required to have an ongoing relationship with the recommending physician. If your personal physician does not offer this service you’ll need to start seeing one who does. A list of medical marijuana doctors can be found here.
- Make an appointment – To get started on the process, make an appointment with an MMP-registered physician. During your visit, the doctor will determine if you qualify for a medical marijuana card. Assuming you do qualify, your doctor will provide you with the proper documents to include with your application.
- Gather required documents – Additional information and documentation are required to be submitted with your application. Any documents need to be scanned or clearly photographed and uploaded with your submission. If you don’t know how to do this you’ll need to find someone to help you.

- Proof of identity

- Proof of residence in Connecticut such as a utility bill or a bank statement.
- A recent passport-sized photograph, no more than 30 old.
- Create an account on the Connecticut Online Medical Marijuana Portal – This is the online registration system used by the MMP. You should use your private email address to create your account. Upon registering you will be asked a series of questions to confirm that you are eligible and have received the required recommendation from your doctor.
- Upload required document – See list above. Again, these must be digital copies.
- Pay the $100 registration fee – This can be paid by credit card, check, or money order. Money orders and checks must be made out to “Treasurer, State of CT.”
That’s it. You’re done.
Processing your application can take up to 30 days but often takes place much sooner. Once you’re approved, you’ll receive a temporary card via email which can be used to purchase your medicine.
What Are The Connecticut Medical Marijuana Rules?
- Dispensaries – There are currently nine state-licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in Connecticut. All nine are serviced by four growers. These numbers may change in the future.
- Legal limits – Registered patients are allowed to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of dried marijuana per month. However, your physician can specify a lower limit.
- Public use – Use of medical marijuana in public is prohibited and can result in criminal charges. Furthermore, patients may not use marijuana in the following locations:
- In any public place
- Moving vehicles including buses
- At work
- At any school, public or private
- In the presence of a minor
- Health insurance – Health insurance providers are not required to cover the costs of medical marijuana treatment.
- Renters – Landlord cannot refuse to rent to a medical marijuana patient not can they take action against a tenant for using marijuana.
- Employers – Employers may not use medical marijuana use as a reason to not hire, fire, or penalize patients. However, they may prohibit the use of marijuana during work hours and discipline employees who do so.
- Growing Your Own – Medical marijuana patients are prohibited from growing marijuana.
- Drugged Driving – Drugged driving works the same as drunk driving under Connecticut law and can result in loss of license, substantial fines, and potentially jail time.
- Additional Qualifying Conditions – Additional qualifying conditions could be added in the future by the Board of Physicians. The public can petition the Board to recommend additional medical conditions to be added to the list of qualify conditions.
Palliative care – Palliative care patients may not use medical marijuana if doing so endangers the health of anyone other than the patient or primary caregiver.
How Do I Renew My Medical Marijuana Card Online?
Your Connecticut medical marijuana card is good for one year from the date of issue.
