Meet With A Doctor

In order to be approved for access to medical marijuana in Maine, patients must be approved by a certified medical marijuana physician.

Before recommending patients for medical marijuana, physicians must be licensed as either a physician, surgeon, or osteopath.

Furthermore, your physician is required to be able to demonstrate a bona fide physician-patient relationship that includes ongoing monitoring of your medical condition.

If you have medical records pertaining to your condition it’s a good idea to gather them in advance. Your physician will review your medical history and examine your current medical condition and make a decision as to whether or not you qualify for medical marijuana.

Maine telemedicine rules

Telemedicine (also known as telehealth) is the practice of consulting with a doctor or other healthcare professional via phone or video conference from the comfort and safety of your own home.

Under Maine medical marijuana rules, patients seeking a medical marijuana card are permitted to take advantage of Maines telemedicine laws and do appointments online from your cell phone, tablet or computer.

A remote consultation generally only takes about 15 minutes or so saving patients quite a bit of time while eliminating the risk of exposure to coronavirus or other bugs.

If you are approved, your doctor will send you a medical marijuana certification by mail. See if you qualify today!

Maine medical marijuana qualifying conditions

Good news: Due to recent changes in Maine’s medical marijuana rules there is no longer a list of qualifying conditions. Now it’s up to your doctor to decide whether or not you can benefit from the use of cannabis.

If your certified medical marijuana doctor deems that you’re suffering from a chronic or debilitating medical condition and that you have not responded to traditional treatments, then you might be eligible.

This includes any chronic or debilitating medical condition or treatment that produces intractable pain or produces cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe nausea, or seizures.

That being said, there are some common medical conditions for which doctors are more inclined to approve a patient for medical marijuana.

Common medical conditions for which patients use medical marijuana include:

Registering with the state

Interestingly, unlike most US states, Maine got this part right. Medical marijuana patients are not required to register with the state. Registration is voluntary and there is no charge.

You can get a card from the state if you so desire, but it’s not required to buy weed at a dispensary.

If you do choose to get a Maine medical marijuana card, then you are required to carry it with you whenever you are carrying marijuana.

Alternatively, if you choose not to register, then you must carry your original physician certification and a Maine-issued photo ID.

This might sound absurd, but did you know that the state of Maine sells more marijuana than it does blueberries, maple syrup, apples, elvers, herring, and oysters combined? According to News Center Maine, the only two products that bring in more revenue in Maine are lobsters and potatoes!

In 2019 more than $100 million was spent on marijuana in Maine. In fact, the state’s medical marijuana industry is twice as big as originally projected.

But we’re not here to brag about how much weed the state consumes. We’re here to help aspiring medical marijuana patients get the medicine they need — and to tell them how to do so without having to set foot in a doctor’s office.

Main medical marijuana card costs

An initial consultation for a Maine medical marijuana card generally costs in the range of a couple of hundred dollars, give or take. Sometimes you can find a physician that will offer a telemedicine appointment for as low as $100.

There is no fee to register with the state. However, if you really feel the need to carry around a medical marijuana card — for example, you might need one if you visit other states — you can acquire one from the state.

Maine medical marijuana age Restrictions

In order to apply for a medical marijuana card in Maine, you must be 18 years of age or older.

A parent or legal guardian may also apply to become a caregiver for a minor. However, a second opinion from another certified physician is required for approval.

Caregivers

Medical marijuana patients in Maine may also designate a primary caregiver. The caregiver is permitted to assist the patient with the purchase or cultivation of medical marijuana as well as administering treatment.

Caregivers must be at least 21 years old and have no prior drug offense convictions.

Unlike adult patients, caregivers are required to register with the State and receive an ID card unless they live in the same household as the patient or are a family member.

Caregivers are permitted to serve a maximum of five patients.

Card expiration and renewal

Maine medical marijuana cards expire one year from the date of issue.

In order to renew a card, the patient or their registered primary caretaker must submit the annual renewal form at least 30 days before a card expires along with a $10 renewal fee.

Changes or replacements

If you lose your card, or you have a change of name or contact information, or you have a new physician or caregiver, you can get a replacement card by contacting Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services at (207) 287-4325.

Consumption rules

Medical marijuana patients in Maine are only permitted to use marijuana or other cannabis products in a private residence.

If you’re caught using marijuana in public you can be fined $100. That includes in your car, boat, or other vehicle.

Do I really need a Maine medical marijuana card?

Recreational marijuana has actually legal in the state since January of 2017. Recreational dispensaries become legal in June of 2019 and are now open for business in 2022.

So, do you really need a medical marijuana card in Maine?

If you’re at least 21 years old, technically, you don’t need a card to purchase or grow your own marijuana in Maine. However, if you’re under 21 you’re going to need one to remain above board.

Secondly, without a medical marijuana approval, adults are limited to growing only three mature cannabis plants.

And finally, if you are indeed treating a medical malady with marijuana, then you are highly advised to do so under the care of a physician so that they can monitor your condition and progress.
