CBN FAQ: Your Guide to Cannabinol

  • Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor cannabinoid found in a handful of cannabis strains.
  • CBN is also produced when THC is exposed to heat and oxygen.
  • CBN is thought to have similar effects to THC, but is far less intoxicating.Any product that can be made with CBD can also be made with CBN.Anyone can buy CBN online without a medical marijuana card.

Medical marijuana is taking the world by storm as the healing herb inches its way to federal legalization in the U.S. One of the non-intoxicating cannabinoids found in cannabis called cannabinol (CBN) is now legally available in many states and anyone can buy CBN online without a medical marijuana card.

There is very little research on this minor, mysterious cannabinoid, but in this article, we’ll answer the most frequently asked questions about CBN.

What is CBN (cannabinol)?

Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor cannabinoid, naturally occurring only in a handful of cannabis strains. More often CBN is produced in aged marijuana as a result of the decomposition of THC, the psychoactive compound produced in marijuana buds.  This conversion from THC to CBN can also be sped up. When marijuana buds or THC are exposed to heat and oxygen it triggers a chemical reaction in which the THC converts to CBN.

Is CBN Intoxicating?

CBN may produce an extremely mild psychoactive effect, as it is derived from THC, however, this response is rare. Studies indicate that CBN produces at best approximately one-sixth to one-tenth of the psychoactive effects of THC.

What products contain CBN?

CBN is now used in an array of products including CBN oil, CBN tinctures, CBN capsules, and CBN topical creams. CBN isolates are also available. Degraded or oxidized cannabis products, such as low-quality baled cannabis and traditionally produced hashish may also be high in CBN.

Can I buy pure CBN?

CBN can be purified in the same way as THC and CBD to produce a CBN isolate that’s over 99 percent pure. CBN isolate can be added to any product to which THC or CBD is added. CBN isolate can also be used for dabbing.

Is CBN legal?

States with medical and recreational marijuana programs allow sales of CBN, but at present, cannabis retains its Schedule I Controlled Substance status in the eyes of the law. This essentially means that CBN is still considered to be part of the illegal cannabis family on a federal level. Possession of CBN products may potentially be prosecuted under the Federal Analogue Act. That being said, many hemp companies are selling CBN on their websites, and we found no reports of law enforcement agencies arresting people for possession of CBN.

Can CBN make you fail a drug test?

In a recent study by a research team from the University of Utah, several minor cannabinoids were examined using screening tests called immunoassays. The team took clean urine samples and infused them with 1,000ng/ml of minor cannabinoids such as CBN, CBD, and CBG in an attempt to detect traces of THC metabolites using immunoassays. The results were open to serious interpretation, as the initial test yielded a negative result. In a second trial, it was discovered that CBN reacted with one of the tests and created a false-positive result. The conclusion: Different tests yielded different results, and more conclusive methods are required.

What are the physical effects of CBN?

There is an abundance of anecdotal evidence proclaiming that aged cannabis has a tendency to induce sleepiness. This may explain why CBN has a reputation for being a sleep-aid. There is little to no clinical evidence to support this claim. CBN interacts with CB1 endocannabinoid receptors in a similar manner to THC and may stimulate appetite. In a limited study using rats, CBN appeared to increase the appetite of the rodents. However, this research is dated and more studies are needed to substantiate this data.

What medical conditions can be treated with CBN?

There is a serious lack of research and data regarding the medical benefits of CBN. However, an abundance of anecdotal evidence indicates some level of medical efficacy. Like CBD, CBN may effectively be an anticonvulsant, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic. CBN may also alleviate some of the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, seizures (including epilepsy), Crohn’s disease, and chronic pain.

Does CBN produce any unwanted side effects?

Aside from the anecdotal evidence claiming that CBN causes sleepiness, there are no documented side effects at this time.

Do any strains of cannabis contain CBN?

Cannabis strains that naturally produce CBN include:

  • Animal Cookies
  • Ace of Spades
  • Magic Jordan
  • Destroyer
  • Mickey Kush
  • Allen Wrench
  • 3 Kings

Can you buy CBN online?

At present, adults can buy CBN products at marijuana dispensaries in states with medical and recreational marijuana programs. However, some types of CBN purchased at dispensaries may contain illegal levels of THC. CBD produced from hemp can be purchased online without a medical marijuana card.

How much does CBN cost?

At present, adults can buy CBN products at marijuana dispensaries in states with medical and recreational marijuana programs. However, some types of CBN purchased at dispensaries may contain illegal levels of THC. CBD produced from hemp can be purchased online without a medical marijuana card.
